The Grandma Files: An Old Recipe Pamphlet

This time around I'm sharing an old pamphlet full of recipes, courtesy of the Appalachian Power company. My grandparents came from West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky, so it's no surprise to me that this pamphlet is in my Grandma's file. This pamphlet is over 40 years old! How cool is that? Really cool, if you ask me.

I don't see it as often anymore, not never, just not as often, but recipe cards and pamphlets used to be common. Almost every grocery store, utility service, product, newspaper, and magazine had recipe cards you could take or purchase. Most product packages do still have printed recipes, and yes you can go online and get plenty of recipes for free. But little me misses the kiosks of recipes. Their bright and lovely pictures, and the promise of a delicious treat, captured my child imagination.

Let's take a look at the one I found!

Isn't this cool? We get a snowman complete with a little chef hat and apron. I like the steam coming from the dish, although the recipe is for a chilled jello salad. It was the '70's after all.

Poinsettias and holly berries, so very festive! I like how the theme is carried with the green print. The recipes are a little blurry in this picture, not to worry I've zoomed in on each page.

These recipes are easy enough to understand on their own, so I won't bother with explaining any of them further. I do hope you're enjoying these glimpses into our American history. Thanks for being here!
